New To Natural?
Change isn’t always easy, and when it comes to changing up our skincare routine, we can be faced with some unexpected challenges. If you’re exploring the decision to switch to natural products for the first time, you may experience a transition phase known as “skin detoxing.” While it may be a bit frustrating, making it to the other side of the detox will reveal glowing skin. Keep reading below for what you can expect.
What exactly is a Skin Detox?
This refers to a short bit of time that might occur when you adopt a new skin regimen. Especially when switching from products that contain synthetics to products that are natural, your skin will need to work to rebalance its pH levels. While it’s completely normal, and even expected after your skin has experienced harsher regimens, this skin detox comes with a few unpleasant side effects that might include:
- Breakouts
- Lack of, or excessive oil production
- Skin sensitivity
- Redness
Your skin acclimates to the products you use regularly, so when switching to new products it can experience a “freak out” of sorts as your body tries to find its equilibrium. This is actually a good sign, as it means that the changes you’re making are having a positive impact, as your body is releasing built up toxins deep within the skin’s layers. And, although it may be alarming at first, stick with it, because this phase will eventually pass.
How Long Does a Skin Detox Last?
This detox could last a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on how much your skin is in need of nourishment and repair. If you are switching from products with synthetics to using more natural products, especially if it’s for the very first time, a skin detox may last a little longer. Many of us have scrubbed, cleaned, peeled and poked at our faces for years, so it may take a bit longer for skin to naturally restore itself from all of the harsh chemicals and ingredients used in the past. Sometimes this means a few bumps and breakouts, but don’t worry, they will clear up as the skin adjusts to your new, gentler, natural skincare products.
Is There Anything I Can Do to Help My Skin Detox?
We recommend giving your skin about two to three, even four weeks to balance out and adjust to your new routine. As the body works hard to clear out old junk and find its new baseline, it will need all the extra support it can get. That means drink plenty of water to help detox from the inside out, eat nourishing foods packed with vitamins and minerals and make sure you are getting enough sleep. If after four weeks your skin has not adjusted, please feel free to contact us for more personal help.
Is There Anything I Shouldn’t Do While My Skin is Detoxing?
When it comes to something as irritating as breakouts, it can difficult to remain patient and wait for the skin detox period to pass. You may be desperate to see change and that can make it feel like the easiest thing to do is abandon your new routine and go back to what you were doing before. Resist that urge and remember, it’s completely normal to experience a bit of a breakout or other strange reaction as your skin works to balance its pH levels. Continuing to switch skincare products will only serve to shock your skin further and could potentially make the issue worse. Trying too many things in a short amount of time is never the answer. Choose a gentle, natural skincare option, stick with it and really give it a chance.
I know from experience that it can be tough, but once the detox phase is over, I’m certain you’ll be relieved to see the benefits of ditching synthetic skincare as your glowing and gorgeous skin is revealed.
xoxo,
